Back-to-School Hairstyles for Moms
Back to school and PSL seasons are here, and it’s my favorite time of the year! While I don’t have a kiddo in school quite yet (she just turned one), we will be out and about doing all the fall activities we can get our hands on!
A quick note about me: I worked both behind the chair and on set for over ten years as a hairstylist and makeup artist, making getting ready feel like second nature. That was until a few months after being pregnant with our little girl, and I quickly joined the mom bun club sprinkled with dry shampoo. After giving birth, there was just no chance in my mind that I would look decent again because sleep was non-existent for months. On days I did get ready, I noticed I felt better and more confident, especially when I had to see people. I’m not talking about getting full glam like I previously had the time to do, but just feeling put together.
Whether you’re a mom doing morning drop-offs at school again, pregnant with your first, or at any other stage of parenthood, know you’re doing an amazing job whether or not you do your hair, and don’t feel pressure to style it if you don’t want to! I would say save this for a day you are feeling up for trying out a few quick styles that you can easily recreate.
The Crossing Braids
This style will work great for medium to long hair lengths as the braid needs enough hair to make it across the head. You will need an elastic and a few bobby pins and about 5-8 min! This is sure to get a few compliments and have people think you spent much longer on the style than you actually did. Watch my step by step on how to create this look either on yourself or for one of the kiddos going back to school!

The High Pony
This was the month I found out I was pregnant with our little girl! The high pony is great for medium to long hair. One quick hack for curling the hair is to do it after it is already up. You could curl the pony in larger sections so it doesn’t take as long as it would if you curled it when it was all down then put it up. Any time saved as a mom is a win! Bonus: wrap a piece of hair around the elastic and secure with a bobby pin underneath for an extra polished look.
The At Home Blowout
A blow out works on literally any hair length. I was nearing the beginning of my third trimester here so I was feeling good and had a bit more energy to give it a go. Although a blowout can take a little more time upfront, it can save you time spent on styling through the week as it tends to hold up well. This would be good to try on a night the baby or kids have already gone to sleep and you have about 30-45 minutes
The Half Up Topknot
This style is another one that works on a wide range of hair lengths. It is adorable for ‘mommy and me” matching days too! If you haven’t had time to touch up highlights or hair color, the knot on top helps disguise that well. Simply section from temple to temple and tie in an elastic. With the hair left out of the mini ponytail you just created, wrap it around in a bun and secure with bobby pins to hold. This style works well with waves from the previous days as well. Spray a little texture spray or dry shampoo in to liven it up again and you’re ready to go!
Double Twist Half Up
This style again can be recreated on most hair lengths. You can dress it up or down depending on how much time you have or feel like dedicating to it! In it’s simplest form, take a section of hair from each side of your hair and bring them to the back to meet. Give the two pieces a few twists (think of winding them up for a visual) then tie the two sections in a knot and bobby pin. Add a hairclip, bow or barrette if desired.
